Part 4: Mixed Wastes

In Part 1 we noted that the Duke Environmental Programs Division (EPD) has to process mixed wastes that include both 125I and 131I.

  1. If the mixed waste includes 500 mCi of 131I and 50 mCi of 125I, what would be the projected decay time to the "safe level" of 1 uCi?

  2. How much 131I would have to be mixed with 50 mCi of 125I in order for the two isotopes to have the same decay duration? Is this likely to occur or not? Explain.
