MAA Minicourse #3
Using and Adapting Online Materials
Sites Containing Most of Their Content
MathDL: The MAA collection in the NSDL. MathDL was started in 2001 and currently consists of 6 components.
JOMA: The Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications (JOMA) is a scholarly, refereed online journal currently starting its sixth year of publication. It contains articles, mathlets, longer modular-length learning materials, and reviews of online resources. There is also a Developer's Area.
DCR: Digital Classroom Resources (DCR) provides a select collection of free online learning materials which are available through the site. These materials have been classroom tested and peer reviewed. New features include the Biological ESTEEM materials, with Excel spreadsheets for students of bio-mathematics, and the MathDL Flash Forum, for folks interested in creating Flash mathlets.
Convergence: The online magazine Convergence features resources for teaching and learning mathematics using the history of mathematics. This site requires registration, but remains free -- at least for now.
OSSLETS: Open Source, Sharable Mathlets (OSSLETS) features mathlets that are designed to be modified and reused.
MAA Reviews: An online database of books of interest to mathematicians. It also provides indications of the books in MAA's Basic Library List. This site is a privilege of membership for MAA members. Non-members may subscribe to this site and to Classroom Capsules for a single price of $25/yr. During this minicourse, you may sign in as a non-member using MAAreviewer as non-MAA Member Login and sangiovese as password.
Classroom Capsules: An online compilation of some of the best of the short classroom materials published by the Mathematical Association of America over the last 112 years. This site is a privilege of membership for MAA members. Non-members may subscribe to this site and to Classroom Capsules for a single price of $25/yr. During this minicourse, you may sign in as a non-member using MAAreviewer as non-MAA Member Login and sangiovese as password.
The Math Forum. The Math Forum has been around for a long time. For most of its life it was located at Swarthmore College. Since 2001 it has been owned by Drexel University. See especially the Math Tools project.
Virtual Laboratories in Probability and Statistics. This is the work of Kyle Siegrist, the new editor of JOMA. There are many resources for teaching and learning probability and statistics including a very nice set of applets.
National Curve Bank: This site has been created largely by Shirley Gray and her students. It has plots, animations, and Mathematica or Maple code for a vast range of planar and spatial curves. There are many other types of resources as well. You can avoid the musical welcome by going to http://curvebank.calstatela.edu/home/home.htm.
Demos with Positive Impact: This site has been created by Lila Roberts at Georgia College and State University and David Hill at Temple. The emphasis here is on materials that can be used as demos in classroom demonstrations.
Connected Curriculum Project. This site was created at Duke by the presenters of this workshop. It contains over 100 modules for student exploration and reports on topics in precalculus, differential and integral calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and engineering mathematics. Worksheets are available for a variety of software including Maple, Mathcad, Mathcad, and Matlab.
WWW Iteractive Mathematics Server A source for using and creating mathlets with "server-side" interactivity. Covers a wide range of mathematical topics. Can be run from the original server (in France), or, if you have the right facilities and technical expertise, the whole system can be installed (free) on your own campus. See also
