PREP Workshop Microsoft Windows Software Installation |
Downloading Software
AOL Instant Messenger
Download AOL's Client from http://aim.aol.com or from our mirror at http://www.math.duke.edu/computing/Workshop/Install_AIM.exe.
You will need a screenname which you can create by going to http://aim.aol.com/aimnew/newreg/register2.adp
Once you install and connect to the AOL service, you can join the chatroom PrepWorkshop to communicate with any other participants who may be online.
Robust Audio Tool (UPDATED)
Download RAT (Robust Audio Tool) from our local mirror at http://www.math.duke.edu/computing/Workshop/rat-4.3.0.exe.
Once you have installed this application, an icon will be placed on your desktop that should connect you to the audio portion of the workshop. Please make sure you disable the "Talk" button unless you are presenting at the time since all the audio is mixed and it is difficult to communicate in a "crowded room."
UPDATE : You should uninstall the version of rat that you have now (4.2.6) and install the new version listed above. This will, among other things, put 3 icons on your desktop instead of 1 which will corresond to 3 separate RAT communication rooms. The first one, RAT 1, will be the primary one for the conference while RAT 2 and RAT 3 will be used for secondary communications and meetings.
VNC
Download TightVNC from http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html. (You want the Windows Installer version) or from our local mirror at http://www.math.duke.edu/computing/Workshop/tightvnc-1.2.4-setup.exe.
Once you install this application, you can use the TightVNC Viewer to connect to remote VNC desktops. In our case you will tunnel an encrypted connection through SSH and connect to our workshop computer as localhost:10. We'll send more instructions on this closer to the workshop.
If you want to share your desktop, you can run the TightVNC Server and establish a password for viewing/controlling the desktop. Use this carefully as anyone can connect to your desktop if they have the proper password.
TeraTerm SSH
You can get a version pre-configured for this workshop from http://www.math.duke.edu/computing/Workshop/tterm-2.3.exe
Install this application and accept the defaults. When you click on the icon it places on the desktop, you should be ready to login to cauchy.math.duke.edu and, upon successful login, will automatically be forwarding port 5910 on your local machine to port 5900 on the workshop machine for the VNC client.
WinSCP2
You can get a version winscp2 for this workshop from http://www.math.duke.edu/computing/Workshop/winscp2.exe
This is the actual application, not an installer, I would recommend saving it directly to your desktop. Run it from your desktop and connect to the machine cauchy.math.duke.edu with the prep-?? username and password you were provided.
